About Dr. Shuster

John L. Shuster, Jr., M.D. is a psychiatrist and palliative medicine physician who is currently on the medical staff at the Alvin C. York Campus of the Veterans Administration's Tennessee Valley Healthcare System.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and his medical degree from Emory University.  He served an internship at Erlanger Medical Center/University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Chattanooga, then served as resident and chief resident in psychiatry in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Shuster was a Soros Faculty Scholar in the Project on Death in America and was the founding Director of the Center for Palliative Care at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB).  Previously, Dr. Shuster has also served as Director of the Psychiatry and Medicine Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Chief Medical Officer of Alive Hospice (in Nashville), and Chief Medical Officer of MindCare Solutions (a telemedicine company headquartered in Franklin, TN).  He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Dr. Shuster has co-edited three books, including the textbook Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology, published in its fourth edition in 2013, and Palliative Care Consultant, published in 2008.  He lives and works in the Nashville, TN area.
